Riga city is divided into 6 municipal parking zones. The price varies according to the proximity to the Old Riga – the closer you are, the higher is the rate per hour. The paid parking hours are from 8:00 till 20:00 in the working days and from 10:00 till 17:00 on Saturday. On Sundays municipal parking is free. The signs for the municipal parking are the big “P” letter with working hours below the sign, which is located along the streets.
There are several ways how one can pay for the city parking in Riga. First of all there are parking meters located on the sidewalks along the street parking zones in Riga. These machines accept banking cards as a payment. There is also an English language option, so there should no be any problems with that. The procedure is quite simple, you have to choose the time interval you are paying for, enter the car registration number, and then perform a regular action with a credit card, like inserting the card into the machine and entering a pin code for a card. Just follow the instructions on the screen. Do not forget to put the ticket under the windscreen of your car.
Another payment method is Mobilly. Mobilly is a special application, which has to be downloaded to your smartphone, allowing to control the parking time from a distance. The first time setting is a bit tricky, because you have to call the operator and connect your bank card with the company’s account, but as soon as it is done, the payment procedure is easy. Each time you park your car, you have to choose the correct parking zone and a time interval. The advantage of this application over the street parking machines is that you can prolong the parking time without a need to go to the parking meter on the street. Mobilly also allows to pay for Europark parking (which is not a municipality’s parking), for the entrance to Jurmala, and even for the train tickets. Its disadvantage is an absence of option to set English as an interface language.
