Flea market is a place where it is possible to exchange money for an item with a history. Among many simple and sophisticated, antique and vintage items one can find there a piece for oneself. The sellers know their products well and stand near them like the conjuring magicians who send you a message – do not pass by, just look. And it is true that it is possible here to immerse yourself into the world of strangers’ stories, where one of them will seem to be in tune with yours – you only just need to take a closer look and catch a wave.
Beautiful boxes by unknown candy producers, porcelain statuettes, period kitchenware, wigs, watches, retro radio, old vinyl plates, books, collectables, apparel – all these and a lot of other things it is possible to find at one of the several flea markets in Riga.
The flea markets have just recently become a fashionable place to visit, but during this time the trend to visit flea markets has picked up a speed. The format of these new Riga flea markets is a bit different from a usual one – a mixture of old things sellers with some modern crafters is quite a usual thing in Riga. There are also special dates assigned to the flea markets so that they appear only on special dates of the calendar, usually once a month. As a rule, it is Saturday or Sunday, what allows to attract a substantially significant number of visitors.
One of the newest flea markets takes place in Spiķeri quarter near the Central Market. It’s seasonal and only one event in September is planned so far. It is one of the largest open-air flea markets, which is located on a square near Daugava river. Here is a link.
One more flea market happens in Avotu apkaime. It is organized inside the premises of a wooden house and it is less regular than Spiķeri market. The information on the dates is available on the FB page of Avotu apkaime events.
Besides the above mentioned flea markets, there exists one regular flea market in Riga, which is called Latgalīte. It is the oldest and the biggest market famous with its distinctive flair – the usual flea market items are mixed here with the piles of metal, repair parts, cables, machine accessories, and other stuff like that. It is open every day except Mondays.
The last but not least is a tiny and cosy flea market located in Čiekurkalns district. This flea market like Latgalīte market works regularly. There are just several stalls with old things located on the territory, but it is possible to find even a furniture here and massive interior elements, including lamps.
