The first date, probably the next husband
“Parunāsim” positions itself as the most romantic place in the town. The name of the spot can be translated as “We will talk”. It is decorated in a way, which invites to discuss an interior endlessly. Even if you are complete strangers, you would definitely find something to talk about here. You can start from anywhere – it could be an old vintage film camera hanging inside the café or a tasty homemade pastry, a piano put in the middle of the space on the 1st floor or a cosy sign outside in the yard (furnished with iron tables and chairs).
Centuries old walls of the adjacent castle implicitly make this place a part of an oldest part of the Old Riga, while the sign on the piano saying “My next husband will be normal” has not only become, probably, the main subject of photographs made by the visitors, it also brings some courage to the ambiance of this place. The music played here is very eclectic, sounding like some works from parent’s music collection. (The music can change, but often they play golden oldies). The café is hidden in the yard, it is situated in the very heart of the Old town, near St. Jacob’s church and an architectural ensemble the Three Brothers. That’s why a stroll through it could be a nice and logical conclusion of your visit.
Going dark
The bar Nemiers (translated as “disturbance”), which shares its terrace with a well known place called Piens (translated as “milk”), is at least as interesting as its neighbour. This is a relatively small space built in a form of a cube. The interior is decorated in the shades of black and grey. The style can be called the dark minimalism. An ascetic decoration of this bar consists just of several elements. The walls are highlighted with erotic graphics, a stuffed animal, and a domed ceiling with a golden centre and black ribbons, coming from it in different directions (the only drapery in the bar). The furniture – the benches and tables are also minimalist.
A concrete surface of tables goes well with grey, a bit shabby floor. Along the perimeter on one side of the hall there is a balcony. The second floor is a zone suitable for sitting. It almost merges with the walls. The bar counter is located in the centre, it forms a smaller square adjacent to the wall behind. The music played here can be described as some bands between Faith no more or Red hot chili peppers. It adds some dark notes to the interior and fuses with crystal glasses used for serving drinks. The place could be good for a romantic evening in a bit dark atmosphere. Check the website for special events, but beware of a loud music during the parties!
