Summer is a great time for getting together outside. There are many options for open-air activities in Riga, including festivals, sunbathing, swimming, jogging, going for others kinds of sport activities. Besides that, it is possible to spend time on the grass in the nice green areas of Riga parks, which take a significant part of the city centre and might be a nice shelter in a hot day or even become a good place for an easy picnic.
It is allowed now to sit on the grass in Riga parks except places, which are marked with prohibition signs and green zones along the canal bank slopes. According to information provided at Riga city council web-page, it is also not forbidden to step and to walk inside the fountains. It is stated that the water in the fountains is chemically treated and its structure is similar to the one in the swimming pools. Nevertheless, it is recommended to use fountains at Esplanāde and in Vērmanes dārzs, because these are less slippery and have less small details hidden underwater.
However, there are some dont’s to be taken into account as well. It is disallowed to consume alcoholic beverages in parks, to stay with an open alcoholic beverage package in such places, to smoke, and to leave a garbage after oneself. Among other things, it is prohibited to take a shelter in public places, including park zones, e.g. to sleep, to stay overnight, to put up a tent. It is also not allowed to stroke a fire, except areas specially assigned for that.
All the information provided has the informative character. For the detailed Latvian rules and regulations, it is advised to appeal to Latvian legislation.
